Cape Chestnut Seedpod

R 0.00

The Cape Chestnut (Calodendrum capense) is a beautiful tree from the Cape. When in bloom the whole canopy goes pink with large 5 petaled flowers. The calyx is 5 star shaped and stays on the tree even when the flower has dropped off. The ovary swells to form the fruit which is a woody capsule with 5 lobes. This opens to drop the smooth black seeds in late summer and autumn. The Xhosa bushmen believed the seeds had magic power and would wear them around their wrists when hunting to bring good luck and skill.
